Healthier Lives at School & Beyond Telemedicine Services
Duplin County Schools continues to partner with East Carolina's Brody School of Medicine and the Center for Rural Health Innovation's Health-e-Schools Program to provide quality acute medical, behavioral, and nutritional care to our school family. These services are referred to as "telemedicine" or "telehealth" and they take place over a safe and secure online network while the student remains in school. A nurse practicioner, along with the school nurse, examine your child via specialized web camera equipment. These services are an additional option for busy parents and busy doctor's offices. Telemedicine is available at school during regular school days and hours. Appointments are arranged by the school nurse.
After an initial screening to determine if a telemedicine exam is needed, the school nurse calls the parent or guardian for permission to do an exam. At that time, the parent may request to be present for the exam, or if unable to be present may be offered a full explanation of findings and treatment reported by phone to the parent by the nurse practioner or health care provider completing the exam. The overall goal of this program is to improve access to health care for our kids.
At this time, services provided by ECU (behavioral and nutirition education) will not be billed. However, acute medical services provided by the Center for Rural Health Innovation 's Health-e-Schools will be billed to the particpant's insurance. For your child to be eligible to participate in the telehealth program please complete and return the telehealth permission form to your child's teacher or the school nurse.
